A personal story from Carol: It all started with friends deciding to downsize, and ended up with us doing the same! This couple learned at church that there is another side to “Honor thy Father and thy Mother.” It is to “Honor thy children!” How? By not leaving them all of your “stuff” to go through after you get your angel wings!
A daunting task you say. Yes, it is. But it is refreshing at the same time … you get to see what your children really want, go through many memories, see what you really don’t need and then bless others by donating to the less fortunate all of those things you’ve kept “just in case.”
So how did we do it? First, we decided what was important to us in a new home and where (same zipcode said I). We began our search. Next we had our current home pre-inspected, wanting it in its best possible condition to sell. Then we reached out to our favorite estate sale contact for guidance on having a sale and values. We began decluttering one room at a time.
Once we found a new home, we decided to move into it before we fully prepped the old house. After moving in, prep began in earnest and in 3-4 weeks we went to market. Bamm, sold the house! Done in 6 months time.
What did we gain from this surprising move after living in the same house for 30+years? A new beginning. A fresh start. Amenities we had lived without for years --- master suite, 12 foot ceilings, open floorplan, less maintenance, lock and leave living to go visit grands and travel. Over the years I have seen people “downsize” and gain features they longed for ... in many ways they upgraded their lifestyle instead.
If you are considering a “downsize” move, we have the experience to guide you … not only by serving 10 or more others in the last few years, but firsthand experience! Don’t be afraid … honor your children AND Thyself!
